Action Alert! Save Crucial Funding for Child Well-Being Programs!

    ACTION ALERT

April 18, 2012

It's Not Over Yet...

Encourage your Representative to support budget amendments that will save funding for programs vital to children's well-being.

As you may know, last week the House Ways and Means Committee released its FY 2013 Budget proposal. We are thrilled that some of the key services that children and families rely on received increased funding, but we are very concerned about inadequate funding levels proposed for others services.
  • The Foster Child State College Tuition and Fee waiver program was only funded for half of the academic year and language was inserted that would limit the waiver to those with very low income levels.
  • Funding for DCF-involved families to receive the in and out of home supports they need to stay together or reunite was eliminated.
  • Mental health consultations in early education programs remain funded at $750,000, far below the FY 2009 funding level of $2.4 million.
  • Healthy Families funding for teen parent services was cut by $300,000.
  • Funding for the MA Child Psychiatry Access Project funding is not sufficient to restore program operations to five days per week.
  • Early Intervention Services are funded at a level that jeopardizes eligibility criteria and compromises staff retention efforts.
These programs have proven effective in helping children overcome significant challenges and gain the skills they need to become productive, healthy adults and caring and dependable parents.

Please CLICK HERE to ask your State Representative to support amendments to the House budget that protect these programs and improve the well-being of at-risk children and youth.

This looks fun!

Hello Everyone,

    Here is some information and a reminder about our 'Family Fun Day with the K-9s' that is being hosted by The UMass Extension 4-H Youth Development Program.

    The event will be held this Sunday, April 22nd 2012 from 1-4pm on the Topsfield Fairgrounds. All should enter through Gate/Parking Lot A. We will be in The Clubhouse (The Red Building), The Arena, and outdoors (weather permitting).

    We will have agility demonstrations, K-9 demonstrations, driving demonstration by miniature horses (again, weather permitting...), silent auction, raffles, an open ambulance for kids, photography and numerous local businesses and vendors who have graciously volunteered their time. There is also a home show taking place in Coolidge Hall, which is separate from us but can be visited as well. Admission is free, and will take place rain or shine.

    Proceeds from this event will benefit Massachusetts Vest-A-Dog Inc.;

Massachusetts Vest-a-Dog, Inc. is an independent, all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c)3 organization, having provided over 300 bulletproof K-9 vests since 2000, has recently expanded their mission to provide support for the following purposes:
1. essential equipment for police / law enforcement K-9 programs throughout Massachusetts;
2. training distinct from customary and usual training for police / law enforcement K-9 programs throughout Massachusetts;
3. purchase of dogs for police / law enforcement K-9 programs throughout Massachusetts.

    Attendance, donations and participation is greatly appreciated and very helpful. Please join us for a fun day with your family and friends! Also, I have attached a flyer that you can feel free to share with your community.

FW: Governor's Statewide Youth Council

Subject: Governor's Statewide Youth Council

Email Header with image of State House and Governor with text "An Update from Governor Deval Patrick"

Dear Colleague,

I write to inform you of an exciting opportunity for youth to participate in state government.

The Governor’s Office of Community Affairs is actively accepting applications for membership in the Governor’s Statewide Youth Council.  Founded in 2008, the goal of the Council is to encourage the Commonwealth’s young people to take on an active leadership role in their communities and give them a greater voice in state government.  The Youth Council acts an advisory body to the Governor and our Administration with a focus on youth-related issues such as education, youth violence, economic development and civic engagement.   This past January, Youth Council members hosted “No Name Calling Day” in dozens of communities across the Commonwealth to continue the work of Governor Patrick’s historic anti-bullying legislation.

The Governor’s Office will select 28 young people to represent the Commonwealth’s 14 counties – two representatives per county.   Youth Council applicants should be passionate, motivated, emerging leaders between the ages of 14 and 20 with an interest in public service.  Responsibilities will include: attending monthly meetings and conference calls, advocating for youth issues and incorporating the ideas of other youth and young adults into the creation of effective policy.

Youth can apply to serve on the Council by submitting an application available at www.mass.gov/governor/youthcouncil by Friday, May 25, 2012.  A selection committee will review applications and select the 28 members, who will then be notified via mail.  For additional information, please contact the Office of Community Affairs at 617-725-4020.

Please forward the attached application to your network to help us reach as many young people as possible.  Thank you, in advance, for your support and enthusiasm.

I look forward to welcoming the new members of the 2012-2014 Youth Council.

Sincerely,

William “Mo” Cowan
Chief of Staff, Office of the Governor

Family Rounds
A monthly series for parents and professionals

April 19, 2012, 12 noon - 1:30 p.m.

Davenport 4 Board Room, NSMC Salem Hospital

"Working with Traumatized Children and their Caregivers"

Presenter:  Gail Arnold, M.Psych, LMHC, Clinical Coordinator, Parent Child Trauma Recovery Program:  Preschool Team Coordinator, OPMH at MassGeneral for Children at North Shore Medical Center

Many of the children we work with present with behaviors that are related to traumatic events they have experienced.  It is important as professionals to understand the impact of trauma on children so that we can offer a trauma informed/sensitive response.

At MassGeneral for Children at NSMC, we have established the Parent Child Trauma Recovery Program which provides both advocacy and Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) to children and their protective caregivers who have experienced domestic violence.

Child Parent Psychotherapy is an evidence-based trauma treatment in which children and their caregivers participate in the therapy.  Any underlying premise being that trauma in children is best addressed within the attachment relationship.

Lectures are free and take place on the third Thursday of the month.

Registration is required.  Email ithomson@partners.org or call 978-354-2670
