Foster Parent Logs and new trainings

Hi all!

You all need to be trained in our new permanency policy. (Kinship and unrestricted)

Please look at the four trainings below and let me or your family resource worker know which you will be attending.

The attached logs are a new requirement of foster parents.

Please print out and start using.  Your family resource worker will start bring them out as well.

Subject: Foster Parent Logs

The forms are now under FORMS on our intranet.  We should start ensuring foster parents receive these when a child is placed – if anyone has recent placements, can you also make sure you give them to them?

We need to get the word out that the PPP training for ALL foster parents is necessary and these are the dates:

September 11th – Support Group at Gerrie Cahill’s (if many people RSVP the location could change) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with support group to follow for an hour.

September 18th  At Lynn DCF Office – 10 a.m. to noon

September 24th  At Lynn DCF Office 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

October 8th at Salem DCF Office 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The MSPCC training schedule should include training dates for all of the area offices.  If someone would like to attend elsewhere we can get them that information.

Backpack Safety Awareness Month

Backpack Safety Awareness Month

Your spine is made of 33 bones called vertebrae, and between the vertebrae are disks that act as natural shock absorbers. When you place a heavy backpack filled with books, binders and gym clothes, the stress can pull you backwards, which causes you to arch your back unnaturally and compress your spine. Research shows that up to 60% of children will experience back pain by the time they are 18 years old.

The maximum weight of a loaded backpack should not exceed 15 % of the child’s body weight and it is shown that 55% of students carry more than this national guideline. 66% of school nurses in the US reported seeing students with pain or injury attributed to improperly carrying their backpacks. Back Pack Safety Month brings together parents, chiropractors and doctors in an effort to ensure that children and teens don’t do serious harm to their back, shoulders and nerves to their arms by improperly wearing their backpack.

Tips For Back Pack Safety:

  • Pick the right backpack that fits your child’s size and strength. If they can’t stand up straight, then they may be carrying too much weight.

  • Encourage them to always use both shoulder straps.

  • Remind your child to take their backpack off when standing for a long period of time to decrease the pressure on their spine.

  • Watch that your children do not fall into the trap of selecting the trendy backpack over the right backpack for them. What is appropriate for an adult, is probably not the right one for a child in school.

With all of the things that parents have to worry about, a backpack may be far down the list of priorities.
However, it is an easy task to ensure that when purchasing a new backpack, the correct one is selected in order
to minimize the risk of damage to our growing children.

Modell's TeamWeek Coupons

Hello Everyone ~

In anticipation of the upcoming Foster Family Fun Day --- participating partner - Modell's Sporting Goods - has stepped up to the plate with a generous opportunity for the Agency as well as our Families.

Please share the attached 15% off coupon to be used at all Modell's --- America's oldest, family-owned and operated retailer of sporting goods, athletic footwear, active apparel and fan gear.

Many parents are transitioning into the back-to-school mode  --- you too might be among them; and, shopping for sneakers, etc -  is no doubt on the proverbial "to-do" list.  And, remember, this weekend we are New Hampshire --- no SALES TAX!

Power to the People!

Forgive me - I digress...

In any event - remind your Foster Families to bring their children, their appetites; but most important --- their amazing Spirits to Franklin Park on Saturday, August 17.

Hope to see you there, too.

Make it a great week.

Best,

Va Lynda
