Dear Paula

I wanted to let you know that the 10 Caring Points on Grandparents Raising Grandchildren has been completed and can now be accessed through this link.

Also, we had a great presentation on Elders & Scams offered by staff of the Attorney General's Office last week. For the first time, we filmed the presentation and a subsequent interview so that we can offer you a YouTube video summary of this important information.

Thank you so much for your care of elders and caregivers.

Dan

Congress Makes Adoption Tax Credit Permanent

The Adoption Tax Credit that was set to expire at the end of 2012 is now a permanent credit. The tax credit allows adoptive parents of children from foster care to reduce their federal income taxes. In the case of an adoption of a U.S. child that a State has determined has special needs, adoptive parents may be eligible for the maximum amount of credit even if they paid no qualified adoption expenses.

What the Adoption Tax Credit Means

An adoptive family can apply this credit toward their federal tax liability, meaning it can reduce what they owe in federal income taxes for the year. Most adoptions from U.S. foster care qualify for the maximum amount of the credit even if no qualified adoption expenses occurred, such as necessary adoption fees, court costs, attorney fees, traveling expenses (including meals and lodging while away from home), and other expenses directly related to the legal adoption of an eligible child. If the State or County provides adoption assistance, that is proof that the child was determined to be special needs.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has more information and required forms for claiming the adoption tax credit:  irs.gov/taxtopics/tc607.html

You can also find more information about the Adoption Tax Credit on the following websites:

Impt! re: Foster Care Reviews

It is really important for foster parents to come to foster care reviews!

It is a task on the child’s service plan that you attend and also in the foster parent agreement.

You bring vital information to the table and it’s very important that you be there.

Of course we do understand when foster parents can’t make it for work or other things out of your control, but in that case you should let your family resource worker know when the review is, and that you are unable to come. You should also write up how the child is doing in school/daycare, home etc as well as any medical issues the child may have and the date of their last dr and dental appointment. That way your voice can be heard even if you can’t be there, and the panel gets the full picture which often only the foster parent can bring.

Thanks!

And HAPPY SPRING! It’s coming!!!!

Tax info for foster parents

Did you know foster parents can claim a child as a dependant if they lived with you at least 6 months out of the 2012 tax year?

You can find out more info through the National Foster Care Association Website.

There is a fee to join, but well worth the fees with info they have year round if you are a foster parent.

If you need a copy of the booklet (too big to mail) I can provide you with a copy.

Fairy Godmother Princess Boutique

Hi all

If you have a girl that will need prom gear, please let me know so I can sign her up!

Hi Carla,

It was wonderful speaking with you today!

GE is hosting the Princess Boutique at General Electric this year on Saturday, April 6 from 9am-3pm.  We invite financially challenged girls to come to the boutique to select an outfit for the prom.  We will have volunteers there to assist them with their selection.  Because we are a Department of Defense contractor, we have to have all visitors pre-register.  We would appreciate it if you could keep track of the sign-up sheet and email us back the names by March 29.  We may check in with you by March 22 to check on the interest level to make sure we have enough volunteers available for the event.

I’ve attached a flyer so you can advertise the event, a sign-up sheet and a note you can give the girls for directions for access on the day of the event.

We would love to have the Cape Ann Dept. of Children and Families participate again this year. If you foresee a large interest from your group, please let us know if you’d like to book a time slot for the girls to come in. I believe we discussed 12PM.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me at any time at 781-594-2460.

Have a great day!
