Regarding the event, Mayor Driscoll stated, “I am pleased that the Moose Lodge has asked the City to merge our resources and create a safety day that will be informative and fun for all of our residents.” Charles Sinclair, Governor of the Moose Lodge stated, “The Salem Moose Family Center is committed to being an active member of the community.  This is the third public safety day we have held here at the center and joining forces with the City has enabled us to expand the day’s events and put together a day where children and adults can obtain important safety information and learn about safety programs available to Salem residents.” Activities will be held outside and inside the family center.  There will be many public safety vehicles on hand outside for kids to explore including: a city fire engine, various police vehicles, an ambulance, and trucks from the Department of Public Services.  There will also be demonstrations by the Essex County Sheriff’s Office Canine Unit at 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Inside the family center, one of the major public safety programs of the day will be the Masonic Youth Child Identification Program (MYCHIP).  The Masons of Massachusetts, partnering with the Massachusetts Crime Prevention Officers Association and the Massachusetts Dental Association, donate MYCHIP resources to make this service, free and available to the public.  Parents are provided with fingerprints, toothprints, a cheek swab and a videotape of their child to be used in case a child is lost or missing.          This year’s Public Safety Day will also include information on a wide range of topics to help keep all our citizens safe and informed during emergencies.  Residents can learn how to sign up for the City’s CodeRED automated calling system and receive information regarding elderly safety programs such as the ‘R U OK’; Lock Box; and LoJack bracelet programs.  The City will also distribute information regarding food and health safety, information about Salem’s Household Hazardous Waste Day and snow emergency information.         The City’s Animal Control Officer will be on hand to distribute animal care and pet safety information, and the City of Salem Community Services and Recreation Department will exhibit the different programs they offer to keep our residents of all ages safe and healthy.          Parents bring your cameras so you don’t miss out on the opportunity to take photographs with McGruff the Crime Dog and Smokey the Bear. At 1:00 p.m. the Salem Moose Lodge will present Tommy Moose stuffed animals to Salem's police and fire departments and Atlantic Ambulance to keep in their emergency vehicles to give to children to help calm them in frightening situations.           In 2003, the Moose International Organization created the Tommy Moose community outreach program, where local chapters provide plush Moose dolls to police, fire and ambulance personnel to keep in their vehicles ready to be given to children when they experience a traumatic event. Mixed in with a day of learning about public safety, there will be face painting, coloring and crafts for children, along with food to purchase.  There will be something for everyone, so please join us and have some fun while learning some important public safety information. | ||
