"Grief and Loss for Children"
Presenter: Cara McAuliffe, MS, CCLS Child Life Specialist, MassGeneral for Children at North Shore Medical Center
Although death is a universal occurrence, each person experiences grief and loss in their own unique way.  When it comes to children, many adults struggle to find a way to offer support and guidance.  While each child is different, we can look to child development to guide our support by learning how a child understands death at each point in their life.  When misconceptions and concerns are understood they can be addressed to aid the child in coping with the end of life.
This presentation provides a basic overview of some of the most common reactions, concerns and misconceptions children experience when faced with bereavement, specific to each age group. We will look at how to support children and families as they begin to approach the loss of a loved one or themselves.  Specifically, we will look at how children cope with their own loss of life and the loss of another life.  In doing so, we will be better prepared to support those around us as they face they encounter grief and loss in their own unique way.
