Foster Parent Support Group

 

 

Please join us for the Cape Ann Area D.C.F. Foster Parent Support Group. The group is open to all unrestricted and kinship Foster Parents. Issues and accomplishments related to fostering children and the impact on the families caring for them is discussed in an informal format. A representative from the Department is available to address questions and experienced foster parents a well as new families share their experiences. Meetings are generally held on the second Wednesday of every month. Please feel free to forward to me any email addresses you think may like to be included in the invitation.

 

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday April 12th from  7:00 to 9:00 PM. This months meeting will be at Brandi and Dave’s home on 152 High Street. Danvers MA. Please call if you need directions.

Car seat recall

 

If you or someone you know is a parent or is expecting, you'll want to read this very carefully till the end as it involves your child's safety on the road.

Major car seat manufacturers have issued recalls for multiple models. The 16 models affected by the recall do not comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213 and could increase the risk injury in the event of a crash. The recall includes popular brands like Graco, Evenflo and Baby Jogger.

 

Here are the brands and model numbers that are affected:

1. Evenflo Evolve 3-in-1 Combination Booster Seats

  • Model # 34411700 manufactured February 26, 2015, to February 9, 2016.
  • Model # 34411741 manufactured May 27, 2015, to February 9, 2016.

2.  Baby Jogger (Various)

  • City GO Infant Car Seats, model # BJ64510 and BJ64529
  • Baby Jogger CIty GO Base, model # BJ80400 and BJ61500
  • City Mini Infant Car Seat/Stroller Travel Systems, model # BJ72510
  • Vue Lite Infant Car Seat/Stroller Travel Systems, model # BJ70411, BJ70424, and BJ70431

3. Graco Milestone Child Seats

The Skills System is DBT and Trauma Informed! 

Emotion regulation difficulties impact us all and change can be difficult for people of all learning abilities. The Skills System offers accessible, tangible self-regulation tools that we can share with the people that we work/live with. This training will include interactive learning activities designed to increase competency related to Skills System skills, coaching techniques and individual/group teaching strategies. There will me opportunities to consult with the Skills System treatment developer about your specific case/program needs. The intended audience includes psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, and other professionals/support providers working in the human service field.

Learning Objectives: 

1.      The participants will be able to assemble emotion regulation skills chains using Skills System concepts.

2.      The participants will be able to engage in in-vivo skills coaching techniques using Skills System emotion regulation concepts.

3.      The participants will be able to conduct Skills System instruction in 1:1 or group setting using the Skills System materials.

Logistics:
Time: 9:00 am – 3:30 pm each day (Wednesday, Thursday & Friday)
Where: JRI's Corporate Office, 160 Gould Street, First Floor Training Room, Needham, MA
Cost: $350 per person 
Food: Lunch and health snacks included. 
Continuing Education: The training will offer 16.5 CE credits by the  APA, the Massachusetts National Association of Social Workers, and Massachusetts Mental Health Counselors Association. The Justice Resource Institute is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  JRI maintains responsibility for all programs and their content.
Hotel information: The Sheraton in Needham, MA is 1.5 miles from the training site and offers a free shuttle within 3 miles of the hotel.

Northshore Fairy Godmother Project

 

The Northshore Fairy Godmother Project, Inc. is a non-profit, volunteer organization. Local businesses, schools and organizations have been very generously assisting us to help financially challenged area teenagers go to the prom. We are always looking for girls we can help! If you know of a deserving financially challenged local area teenage girl who should be able go to the Prom, contact us. All referrals will be kept strictly confidential.

Subject: Mindfulness-Based Parenting Series Starts February 6th

 

"Whole Brain Parenting"

Mindfulness-Based Series for Parents and Grandparents to support the inner growth and development  of children and of the adults who love and care for them, through better understanding and appreciating the interactions of daily life. This series includes new findings from the fields of neurobiology and mindfulness practice.

Topics include

Becoming grounded and integrating mindfulness into parenting 

Helping children to integrate their “upstairs” and “downstairs” brains, to 

•      handle strong emotions, 

•      develop self-understanding and empathy for others, 

•      make sound decisions  &  behave in ways that serve themselves and others

Helping children overcome obstacles by making implicit memories explicit

Integrating thoughts, feelings, body sensations and perceptions

Enabling children (and ourselves) to

•      live more mindfully 

•      become more disciplined, and

•      develop a fuller sense of self

Exploring positive discipline 

•     Avoiding power struggles

•     Setting limits

•     Encouraging self-discipline

Communicating clearly and effectively with children and encouraging them to do the same

 

$180 for the 6-part series; $240 per couple, if both parents attend
The series will be held at the Second Congregational Church 35 Conant St, Beverly, Monday evenings, 7-8:30, beginning February 6th

Cynthia Griffin and Evalyn Lawnsby are parents and grandparents,  educators, and licensed psychotherapists who work with adults, children, and families in their private practices. They have been facilitating parent workshops and groups for 30 years.  They have a holistic orientation, integrating mind/body understandings and practices such as mindfulness and meditation into all of their work.
