CAN ACTION ALERT: Help restore funding for foster care and early intervention programs!

Dear CAN Members:

On Wednesday, the House Ways and Means Committee released their fiscal year 2012 budget recommendations. The news for foster children and very young children struggling to overcome significant developmental delays is not good.

Funding for DCF has been cut by more than $20 million from FY11 levels bringing the cuts since FY08 to nearly $60 million. If allowed to stand, these cuts will mean:

  • A 25 percent reduction in the clothing allowance which pays for coats, shoes, underwear etc…for foster children.
  • Elimination of community based services to support families struggling to meet the goals of their service plans.

Funding for DCF involved children to attend state colleges and universities is funded at less than half of what is needed for a full year of tuition. In addition, Early Intervention funding was cut 27 percent - the same devastating cut recommended by the Governor.  More than 6,000 working families and their children will lose Early Intervention services if funding is not restored.

These are difficult economic times, but cutting the clothing off the backs of foster children and turning our backs on other DCF kids and children with developmental delays is not the answer.

Click here to HERE to contact your legislator today and ask him or her to sign on as a co-sponsor to amendments that will reverse these draconian cuts.
