Good resource:

How to Protect Vulnerable Children from Credit Reporting Problems
Youth in foster care are particularly susceptible to identity theft because they often lack a permanent address and their personal information is frequently shared among numerous adults and agency databases. This resource from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) provides child welfare caseworkers and agencies with guidance on how they can help young people in foster care start their adult lives with healthy credit. It includes sample letters that child welfare case workers may use when disputing errors found in credit reports of children in their care, as well tip sheets for parents and foster care caseworkers to help young people start and maintain good credit. Subject: For DCF college bound youth...New NSCC SAILL learning community program

Hello everyone,

North Shore Community College has created a new program to start this fall designed for students with academic potential who test into Composition 1 and have overcome significant challenges and could benefit from a supportive learning community.  This will be set up as a cohort allowing students to make connections and support each other.  Programs such as these have proven to be very beneficial to the success of youth who fall into this category.

Please see the attached flyer and if interested, the two contact people are listed there.

If not enough youth sign up, we could lose this program.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you and take care!

Jen

Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me a few weeks ago about the new North Shore Community College SAILL learning community program we are developing for the Fall. I have attached the flier. Please let me know if you have any questions. Please feel free to share the flier widely with staff, students and anyone else who might be interested!

SAILL is designed for students with academic potential who test into Composition 1 and have overcome significant challenges and could benefit from a supportive learning community at the beginning of their NSCC experience. Students take 9 credits as a cohort. Cohort classes were chosen to enhance student success and transfer into a wide variety of NSCC Programs of Study. If students would like to take more than 9 credits, program staff will advise students about other classes that fit into their academic and career goals. The program is open to men and women.

Thanks again for your help in getting the word out about SAILL!

May is National Foster Care Month

Today, like every day, approximately 5- 10 children will come into the custody of The Department of Social Services in the Salem office alone. Kids who go to schools and churches and live and play right here on the north shore. It's a frightening experience for a child to suddenly be removed from everything and everyone they know.

These kids need loving, nurturing families who will open their homes. If you might be interested in caring for children and teens who are deserving of a safe, loving home, please call Carla King, Foster Parent Recruiter, at 978-825-3862 or 1-800-KIDS-508. Foster parents receive ongoing support from the Salem office, MSPCC, and local support groups.

Do to our part, The Children's Piazza is offering 1/2 price admission all day every day for foster care parents and their foster children during the month of May. Foster parents, come play with us!
