Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

January 16, 2011

Contest for Educational Scholarship

How Can I Serve?

Four educational scholarships will be awarded ($1500, $1000, and 2 for $750) at the HOPE worldwide MLK Day celebration on January 16th, to defray the cost of fees and books to three young men or women who will attend (or who are already attending) school after high school graduation.

Eligibility requirements: (1) You must be a senior in high school with plans on attending school upon graduation; or, (2) You must already be attending a post-high school training program or college at the present time; (3) You must be presently served by the Massachusetts DCF; and, (4) you must not be a past winner. You must be present on January 16th to receive your prize, at Lawrence High School in Lawrence, MA.

Directions:

Write a one page essay, 3 or 4 paragraphs long. The essay should be about serving others—our school mates, our family, or our community. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. lived a life of service and emphasized that serving is a key to a happy, successful, and meaningful life. Please read the attached speech by Dr. King to see what he thought about being great and serving before writing your essay.

Submit your typed essay, along with your name, address and telephone # (or address and phone # of your area DCF office) by January 5th by mailing it to HOPE worldwide, c/o D. Drake, 109 Dudley Road, Billerica, MA 01821. You may also submit your essay electronically at hopeessay@yahoo.com. All Essays will be judged by a committee and you will be notified by phone or mail if you have won by the week of January 10, 2010. Scholarships will be awarded on Saturday, January 16th during the MLK Day Celebration sponsored by HOPE worldwide and the Boston Church of Christ. While there are only four scholarships to be awarded, everyone who enters the contest will receive a prize.

Hi Saf and Michelle,

I have the check for the $500 scholarship we awarded last weekend, made out to DCF Kids Fund. I would like to deliver it to you personally, because I have something I would like to give Michelle at the same time. Would it be convenient for you if I dropped by your office today or tomorrow?

Also, I'm not sure what happened with the essay contest this year for MLK,  but we have not received any essays. Usually, by this time, we have received about a dozen. I am attaching the entry form again, with an extended deadline, and hoping it would be possible to get it out to the area offices. I mentioned it at the party to the new director in Haverhill, and she didn't seem to know about it. If there is anything I can do to get the word out, please let me know.

Thank you both so much for all the work you do on behalf of the teens.

Foster teens and $$$$ (driver's education and internships)

From: Hubbard, Jennifer (DCF)
Sent: Wednesday, December 15, 2010 12:23 PM
To: DSS-DL - Lynn Users; DSS-DL - CapeAnn Users
Subject: Foster teens and $$$$ (driver's education and internships)

Hello Everyone,
I have received a lot of questions lately with regards to driver's education and PAYA (Preparing Adolescents for Young Adulthood) incentives.  I have attached a document explaining the PAYA incentives and the W9form the youth needs to sign  when requesting an incentive.  Please keep in mind that on the W9 form, the address written down has to match an open MAILING address on Family Net.  In order to receive the $300 for driver's education, the youth has to have already started classes to show good faith in attendance.  A lot of driver's education programs will allow the student to start with a minimal deposit (i.e. $100, which can be two PAYA incentives).  Once the student starts, they can request their PAYA incentive for the $300 along with sending in the down payment receipt and proof they have started the course.

Most driver's education programs are around $750, which includes the cost of the driving lessons required.  If the youth is not working and unable to pay the remaining balance, they can complete an internship.  This is the other document I have attached to this email.  The internship is federal funding via outreach that the youth can volunteer and receive reimbursement at a place or organization that will aid in there future career decisions, build their resume and hopefully gain employment upon the end of the internship.  This is not meant to replace employment but to give the youth a helping start.  The initial amount of hours requested is 40 total (i.e. 10 hours a week for 4 weeks) and they would be reimbursed $7/hour without any tax deductions ($280).  Upon completing these hours, they can request an extension for another 40hours.  The youth, with the help of their social worker, friends, family or other supports, will need to identify an appropriate place for an internship.  Some places that have been used in the past were YMCA, hair salons, museums, local non-profits, etc...

Remember, this is for youth in care and custody of DCF or signed a voluntary placement agreement with DCF at age 18. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,

nice story

Always nice to share a nice story about youth in foster care...

2010 Salem News Boys Soccer All-Star Team

BOYS OSCCER PLAYER OF THE YEAR

EDWIN DEMOYA

Salem Senior

Forward

Maturity can do wonders for a high school athlete.

Edwin Demoya was one of the elite players in the Northeastern Conference in 2009, season but Salem High head coach Mike Collins knew he could get more out of his forward. By the time this fall rolled around, Demoya had transformed himself from a one-trick pony into a complete five-tool player. The Witches' senior captain played his way onto the All-State and All-New England teams, earned the Northeastern Conference Large Most Valuable Player award and has been named The Salem News Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

"I think this year, the maturity factor was very noticeable with Edwin," said Collins. "While last year he was more of a one or two-dimensional player, this year he covered all the bases."

Demoya's highlight of the season came in the Witches' last regular season game when he tallied a hat trick against a very good Peabody team. Demoya finished with 26 goals and 10 assists, but it was that heightened maturity that was so valuable to a Salem team that had just three seniors.

"He went out of his way to make other players on his team better. This season you could see his experience," said Collins. "With only three seniors on the team, Eddie played a huge utility role. He had to spread the wealth around big time."

Hi All,

I have a lot of info to pass on, BUT, I’m going to wait a few days so not to inundate and overwhelm you!!!!  The exception is I’m asking you to assist us  in spreading the word about the Partnership’s Parent & Child Playgroup being held at ( & in collaboration with) Cape Ann Families at 28 Emerson Ave. on Tuesday, November 23rd, 10:00-11:30 am.

Stacy Randell, the director of CA Families & I have been doing some outreach to families in regards to promoting our programs, aimed at supporting families with young children.  Group “get togethers” are a great way to hear & understand the needs of families in our community.

I am happy to provide copies of the flyer if needed.  Just let me know.

Look forward to info on our WONDERFUL presentations last night from some of Cape Ann’s finest family supporters/educators, updates on Professional Development opportunities and notes from the CFCE statewide meeting I recently attended.

Thanks and best regards,

Amy

True Colors Performance

True Colors will be performing in our office!  Decemeber 7th at 2:00.
Please join us!
Good Morning Jack,

As the regional GLBT liaison for the Northern Region, I have been asked to secure space for the True Colors troupe to perform in a local area office.  They have performed in several other regions in area offices over the past couple of years.  They are a group of teens and young adults, some of whom are youth in care, who perform in area offices and elsewhere to raise awareness of GLBT youth in care and life in general.  Below is some information from their website: http://www.thetheateroffensive.org/truecolors.html#truecolors
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TRUE COLORS TOURING/BOOKING
An estimated 30,000 youth in Massachusetts identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT). The most recent Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Survey results show that, in comparison to their straight peers, youth who identify as LGB are over three times more likely to have missed school in the past month because of feeling unsafe, over four times more likely to have been injured or threatened with a weapon at school, and over four times more likely to have attempted suicide in the past year. These statistics cannot be ignored. It's time to show our support of LGBT students and put a stop to discrimination and violence in our schools and our communities.
Help your students feel safe and supported. True Colors is now booking performances, previews and workshops through May 2011. Let us help you show YOUR true colors.
Performances
Each season, troupe members tour their original 30-minute show to up to 20 schools, community groups and events, performing for up to 2,000 audience members across New England. After each performance, the troupe leads a 20-minute post-show discussion with the audience. This discussion enables the audience to ask frank questions about the creation process, the youth and LGBTQQA issues in general. The discussion is assisted by a learning guide with customized resources, articles and activities for and about LGBTQQ youth and allies.
Hi Michelle,
Attached is the Beverly Public Schools Free and Reduced Application for our school breakfast and lunch program. Will you please circulate it among of all the Cape Ann workers servicing Beverly families and to social workers/homefinders who have children placed in foster care in Beverly? It has come to our attention that a good number of children who are eligible for free and reduced breakfast and lunch are not receiving it.
Thanks,
If you have clients (teens) needing a job, this a fun activity for them to go to. Work Opportunities typically gets pizza, soda, and snacks for the kids as well? Josh Andreozzi (former FN worker) runs that group and adds allot of energy to it. It was very successful last year when Work Opportunities did this group. I'm hoping to get at least 10 new teens signed up for the full WO program as a result of attending this group?? (All I would need would be a FN referral following the group; automatic acceptance to those teens who want to participate.)
Perfect time for kids to get a job, holidays around the corner!
Thanks,
Mark
Another Training Resource for Foster/Adoptive Parents - "Foster Parent College"
For those who cannot make our trainings here is another opportunity,
Hello,
I learned from one of our colleagues that another good site for our families to receive training is "Foster Parent College", at http://www.fosterparentcollege.com/ .
Most of the Foster Parent College Program courses cost $10.00 per person, per course.  Foster Parents should contact their Regional Kid's Net Director to let him/her know the course they want to take and the cost.  The Kid's Net Regional Director will then seek approval for reimbursement of the fee to the foster parent for the course.  The fee, if approved, will be reimbursed by Kid's Net to the foster parent as long as they have the proper documentation that includes a receipt from the program that they successfully took the on-line course and a copy of their credit card statement or cancelled check showing that the fee was paid.
Again, foster parents who wish to take one of these courses must talk with their Regional Kid's Net Director and receive approval prior to seeking reimbursement for any course they may take at "Foster Parent College".
Regards,
Debbie
